Langan
Michele O’Connor is a Principal at Langan and director of the firm’s civil engineering practice in New York City. Langan provides integrated planning, site engineering, and environmental consulting services for private developers, property owners, and public sector clients.
Michele’s career at Langan began in 1994 as a Staff Engineer. Since then she has successfully risen through the ranks of the firm, establishing herself as a land development expert for large scale urban redevelopment projects. In 2010 she moved to Langan’s New York City office, where she currently co-leads a team of 40 civil engineers. Her practice includes site engineering design and planning for a wide variety of commercial, institutional, park, retail, and residential development projects. Michele’s expertise includes site assessment and feasibility studies, resiliency consultation and design, detailed engineering designs for land use permitting and construction, infrastructure design, hydraulic analyses, stormwater management design, and construction phase coordination and administration.
Throughout her career, Michele has managed numerous groundbreaking projects in the New York Metropolitan area. One of her most notable projects to date is Hudson Park and Boulevard, a 4-acre public park within the Hudson Yard District. As the project’s site/civil and geotechnical engineering consultant, Langan was integral part of the development team who successfully transformed the site from an industrial neighborhood to a pedestrian-friendly vibrant mixed-use district. In 2016, the project was awarded an ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Award for its innovative engineering design and sustainable vision for the area. Michele has also directed Langan’s multi-disciplinary teams on prominent developments such as TWA Flight Center Hotel at John F. Kennedy International Airport, a private project converting the iconic Eero Saarinen landmark building into a mixed-use hotel and conference center; and Bronx Terminal Market, an 18-acre retail urban redevelopment consisting of 1 MSF of retail, restaurant and neighborhood services and design of off-site public infrastructure and roadway improvements. In 2016, Michele was recognized as one of Retail’s Top Women by Real Estate Forum Magazine.
Besides her passion for civil engineering, Michele is also extremely passionate about supporting, mentoring, and empowering industry women. This dedication inspired her to co-found Women@Langan in September 2015, where she currently serves as both a corporate and local leader. The program’s mission is to foster an atmosphere of mentorship and support to empower the firm’s women to achieve career and personal success. Since its launch, Women@Langan has provided a forum for women to develop a community, share experiences, and form lasting relationships. The extent of Women@Langan’s success goes beyond the firm. Through Michele’s continuous promotion of the program, leaders throughout the architectural, engineering, and construction industry have sought her advice on best practices and how to execute similar initiatives at their firms.
Michele’s leadership abilities are also visible throughout the industry. She is serving as 2017 President of CREW New York and a Board Member of Women Builders Council. As President-Elect of CREW New York, she oversaw the preparation of the chapter’s strategic plan and assisted in the planning of the 2016 CREW Network convention in NYC.
Michele earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University College of Engineering. She is a licensed professional engineer in New York and New Jersey and a LEED certified professional.
